Did you know? This year marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Rosa Parks – a woman who took a seat to stand for justice for all.
Creekside High School student, Hakeem Clark was well aware of this milestone. Hakeem was invited to be part of a production that took place at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church celebrating Ms. Parks’ birthday. Hakeem recited the poem “I Too, Sing America” by Langston Hughes.
Congratulations to Hakeem on this honor and for representing that Creekside Pride out in the community.
“I Too, Sing America” by Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed —I, too, am America.
